THE FIRST WEALTH IS HEALTH
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Optimizing nutrition is critical to maintaining health and wellbeing. In fact, what you put on the end of your fork everyday may just be the most powerful tool you can utilize to optimize your own health and wellbeing. Nutrition has a profound influence on healing, longevity, and both preventing and reversing many chronic diseases. And contrary to what social media influencers might say- THERE IS NO ONE DIET for everyone. We are all unique with unique needs. Inflammation, immune disorders, cardiovascular disease, digestive disorders, allergies, food sensitivities, toxicity, fatigue, mood disorders, and immune disfunctions are all influenced by our food choices. Many foods produced today are highly processed, depleted of nutrients, calorie dense, and often contain toxic and addictive chemicals, pesticides, additives, residues, and are GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Food composition, macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) are essential for cellular energy production. Inadequate nutrients affect cellular communication and energy production, which can result in decreased energy, inflammation, and lowered immune responses. Our SAD (standard American diet) diet leads to metabolic dysfunction and creates biological imbalances causing diminished health and leads to illnesses across the lifecycle. Nurse Coaching can help clients navigate the many conflicting and confusing sources of information, or disinformation on what to eat. Cutting out highly processed "foods" and removing sugary drinks in the diet is one of the most impactful and immediate actions you can take to support your health.
The idea of using food as medicine is not a new one. In fact, the father of medicine Hippocrates, had some timeless words of wisdom he shared that have inspired people for thousands of years. Maybe you have heard his famous words “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food” or “leave your drugs in the chemist’s pot if you can cure your patient with food”. He knew then, what we need SO MUCH MORE of now; healthy, whole, nutritious foods that heal. At Fostering Wellness, I believe the most important decision you make to support your health starts with what you put on the end of your fork everyday. I believe in and practice a plant- forward approach to nutrition. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes supports overall wellbeing. If you are choosing to consume animal products, including grass fed, organic options from regenerative farms while including more whole foods, and eating a rainbow of fruits and veggies can support your overall health goals.
Nurse coaching in nutrition permeates throughout each of the 5-Pillars of health. Whether you are curious about incorporating more plants in your current diet, eliminating processed foods, or just wanting to gain experience in how to make healthier choices when grocery shopping (yes- we can take a field trip!), I am here to support your nutritional evolution. With a certification in functional nutrition coaching (FNC), I can support you in implementing or exploring various foods to support your health evolution.
